Round One: Mohawk Valley 4, Rochester 2

Game recaps from the Strat-generated box scores. In this Round One matchup, the No. 2 Mohawk Valley Lions (113-49) had home-field advantage versus the No. 7 Rochester Pilots (86-76).


Game One
Pilots 2, Lions 1

Starters: Jake Arrieta @ Garrett Richards

In a thriller the Rochester Pilots staged a dramatic comeback then held on to win over the Mohawk Valley Lions by a score of 2 to 1 at The Lion's Den.

Rochester scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Matt Adams began the Rochester spurt when he doubled. Devin Mesoraco came to the plate and bombed a two-run dinger. Both teams totaled 6 hits on the night. 

Jordan Walden (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Walden got relief help from Joaquin Benoit who gained credit for his 1st save. Joe Smith(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.


Game Two
Pilots 3, Lions 0

Starters: Carlos Carrasco @ Yu Darvish

Carlos Carrasco pitched 8 strong innings at The Lion's Den as the Rochester Pilots beat the Mohawk Valley Lions by the count of 3 to 0.

In the top of the 6th inning Rochester scored 2 runs. The critical plate appearance was by Adrian Beltre who silenced the crowd when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Carrasco (1-0) got help from Joaquin Benoit who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 2nd save. 

Yu Darvish (0-1) was the loser. He gave up 5 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.


Game Three
Lions 7, Pilots 0

Starters: Stephen Strasburg @ Matt Garza

Albert Pujols ripped 2 home runs and had 6 RBI and Stephen Strasburg blanked Rochester allowing just 2 hits at Grant Park as the Mohawk Valley Lions beat the Rochester Pilots by the count of 7 to 0.

Pujols had a big day with his bat. He smacked a three-run homer in the 1st inning and belted a three-run homer in the 3rd inning. The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score again.

Strasburg (1-0) went the distance for the shutout. The loss was charged to Matt Garza (0-1). He was hit hard and gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 2/3 innings. 


Game Four
Lions 3, Pilots 0

Starters: David Price @ Jon Lester

David Price (1-0) and Jon Lester (0-1) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with Price and the Mohawk Valley Lions coming out on top of the Rochester Pilots 3 to 0.

Rochester found themselves trailing quickly as the Mohawk Valley bats came through in the first inning scoring one runner using 2 hits. That early scoring was all that Price needed. Mohawk Valley finished with 9 hits while Rochester ended up with 5.

Price got help from Joe Smith who earned his 1st save.


Game Five
Lions 4, Pilots 1

Starters: Garrett Richards @ Jake Arrieta

Erick Aybar had 2 base hits as the Mohawk Valley Lions beat the Rochester Pilots by a score of 4 to 1.

Mohawk Valley brought 3 runs across the plate in the 7th inning when they came up with 4 base hits. Ben Zobrist kicked off the action when he banged out a single. Albert Pujols stepped into the batter's box and he stroked a single. Aybar then laced a base-hit.

Aybar got a great jump and stole second easily. After an out was recorded, Jason Kipnis stepped in and he slapped a one-base hit. Denard Span was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Joe Smith was perfect in the ninth giving him his 2nd save on the season.

Garrett Richards (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing 1 run. Jake Arrieta (0-1) took the loss. He surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.


Game Six
Lions 5, Pilots 1

Starters: Carlos Carrasco @ Yu Darvish

Yu Darvish dominated by striking out 10 Rochester batters at The Lion's Den as the Mohawk Valley Lions beat the Rochester Pilots 5 to 1.

Darvish (1-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Mohawk Valley. He went 5 1/3 innings, surrendering 5 hits and 4 walks reducing his ERA from 4.50 to 3.18. Both teams totaled 7 hits on the night.

Carlos Carrasco (1-1) absorbed the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs in 4 innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Darvish—except Rochester.
