Ian Desmond smacked 2 home runs and had 3 RBI at Huskie Park as the Miami Manatees beat the Northeast Huskies by the count of 8 to 6.
Desmond was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He ripped a solo home run in the 3rd inning, delivered a solo blast in the 5th inning and laced a base hit which brought home a run in the 6th inning. Northeast had a chance to come back in the 9th but came up short.
Corey Kluber (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 1 run. Kluber was helped out by Koji Uehara who recorded his 1st save. Adam Wainwright (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 3 home runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Game Two
Huskies 7, Manatees 5 (15 innings)
Starters: Johnny Cueto @ Hiroki Kuroda
Evan Longoria went deep and had 2 RBI and Matt Shoemaker delivered 4 solid innings as the Northeast Huskies beat the Miami Manatees in 15 innings by a score of 7 to 5.
The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Northeast came out the victor in the 15th inning. After an out was recorded, Jose Reyes got things going when he doubled. Longoria stepped up next and he popped a two-run clout over the fence, giving Northeast the win much to the delight of the hometown crowd. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing—5 times in all.
Shoemaker (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 innings and allowing no runs. Will Smith (0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.
Game Three
Manatees 4, Huskies 2
Starters: Kyle Lohse @ Vance Worley
Matt Dominguez lofted one into the cheap seats and had 2 RBI as the Miami Manatees outscored the Northeast Huskies 4 to 2.
Miami scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. The critical plate appearance was by Dominguez who made the crowd come alive when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. Northeast had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Shawn Tolleson (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 2/3 innings. Koji Uehara earned the save, his 2nd. Kyle Lohse (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
Game Four
Manatees 5, Huskies 2
Starters: Adam Wainwright @ Corey Kluber
Matt Dominguez slammed a homerun at Miami Ballpark as the Miami Manatees beat the Northeast Huskies 5 to 2.
Miami came up with 3 runs in the 6th inning with the help of 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Marcell Ozuna who brought a roar from the partisan Miami Ballpark fans when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. Miami had a total of 9 hits for the game.
Corey Kluber (2-0) allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Cody Allen preserved the game for Kluber, recording his his 1st save. Adam Wainwright (0-2) suffered the loss. He surrendered 3 home runs in his 7 2/3 innings.
Game Five
Manatees 5, Huskies3
Starters: Hiroki Kuroda @ Johnny Cueto
Nelson Cruz hit one over the fence at Miami Ballpark as the Miami Manatees beat the Northeast Huskies 5 to 3.
Miami scored 3 runs in the decisive bottom of the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits. That was all Johnny Cueto (1-0) needed. Miami rapped out 10 hits for the night.
Cueto was helped out by Francisco Rodriguez who recorded his 1st save. Hiroki Kuroda (0-1) took the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 9 hits and 1 walk.
