Round Two: Northwest 4, Miami 3

Game recaps from the Strat-generated box scores. In this Round Two matchup, the No. 1 Northwest Stars (117-45) had home-field advantage versus the No. 5 Miami Manatees (90-72).


Game One
Stars 6, Manatees 3

Starters: Corey Kluber @ Scott Kazmir

First baseman Justin Morneau had 2 base hits at Star Dome as the Northwest Stars beat the Miami Manatees by the count of 6 to 3.

Northwest claimed the early lead in the first inning when they came up with 3 runs on 3 hits. The highlight belonged to Adam Jones who came through for the home fans when he clubbed a three-run home run. Northwest and Miami each finished the night with 8 hits.

Scott Kazmir (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 runs. Kazmir got help from Craig Kimbrel who earned his 2nd save. Corey Kluber (2-1) took the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 6 walks in 6 innings.


Game Two
Stars 4, Manatees 0

Starters: Johnny Cueto @ Marcus Stroman

Marcus Stroman delivered 8 solid innings as the Northwest Stars beat the Miami Manatees by a score of 4 to 0.

Stroman (2-1) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Miami hitters. He surrendered only 1 hit and no walks in 8 innings lowering his ERA from 7.50 to 3.21. Northwest had only 6 hits for the night.

Johnny Cueto (1-1) was the loser. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered just 3 hits and no walks.


Game Three
Manatees 4, Stars 3

Starters: Jordan Zimmermann @ Vance Worley

Hanley Ramirez slammed a home run and had 3 RBI as the Miami Manatees beat the Northwest Stars by a score of 4 to 3.

Vance Worley (1-0) pitched a solid game. He went 7 innings and surrendered up 8 hits and 2 walks, lowering his ERA from 1.69 to 1.46. Northwest tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Koji Uehara earned the save, his 3rd. Jordan Zimmermann (1-2) was the loser.


Game Four
Manatees 3, Stars 2

Starters: Doug Fister @ Corey Kluber

The Miami Manatees edged the Northwest Stars at Miami Ballpark by the score of 3 to 2.

Northwest found themselves trailing quickly as the Miami bats came through in the first inning plating an isolated run. Koji Uehara was great in relief and recorded his 4th save.

Corey Kluber (3-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 1 run. Doug Fister (0-1) ended up with the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 4 walks.


Game Five
Manatees 3, Stars 2

Starters: Scott Kazmir @ Johnny Cueto

Rickie Weeks hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI at Miami Ballpark as the Miami Manatees came back dramatically to top the Northwest Stars by the score of 3 to 2.

Miami came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Marcell Ozuna led off and started the attack as he banged out a single. Hanley Ramirez followed next and he doubled. Weeks then doubled giving Miami the victory as 45,815 happy fans celebrated wildly. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

The winning pitcher was Mike Dunn (1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Craig Kimbrel (0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.


Game Six
Stars 3, Manatees 2

Starters: Anibal Sanchez @ Jordan Zimmermann

In a thriling finish the Northwest Stars pulled off the win over the Miami Manatees by a score of 3 to 2 at Star Dome.

The game was won by Northwest with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Brian Dozier doubled. Alex Gordon followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Adam Jones then hit a deep fly giving Northwest the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Northwest had only 4 hits for the game.

The victory was credited to Kevin Quackenbush (3-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Anibal Sanchez (0-1) suffered the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 4 hits in 8 innings.


Game Seven
Stars 4, Manatees 3

Starters: Corey Kluber @ Mike Fiers

45,469 fans watched an exciting game at Star Dome. The Northwest Stars topped the Miami Manatees by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Kevin Quackenbush (4-0) was the winning pitcher in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings, improving his ERA from 5.06 to 3.68. Both teams finished the game with 6 hits.

Quackenbush was helped out by Craig Kimbrel who recorded his 3rd save. Corey Kluber(3-2) was the losing pitcher.
