Top 10 Uncarded Prospects Omitted From 2016 Draft

By Matt Eddy

The 2016 MMDA draft promises to echo through the ages with one of the deepest crops of first-round talent ever. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant and Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor will figure prominently at the top of the draft, while a second wave of talent—Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager, Mets righthander Noah Syndergaard, Twins third baseman Miguel Sano and Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber—would be in the conversation for No. 1 overall in most years.

The depth of this year's major league rookie crop is semmingly boundless, such that even a list of rookies who did not play enough to receive a Strat-O-Matic card is more robust than usual. Just think how much better this year's rookie class would look with some of the following players eligible for selection. But alas, no card means no go as far as the MMDA draft is concerned.

To repeat: The following players made their big league debuts in 2015 but are not eligible for the MMDA draft in February.

Max Kepler hit .322/.416/.531 with 54 XBH, 18 SB and 67 BB
in 112 games at Double-A in 2015
1. Max Kepler, rf/1b, Twins. The German-born Kepler scored the largest bonus ever by a European amateur when he signed with the Twins in 2009. Given that he was 16 years old at the time, his baseball development only seems like it's unfolded at a glacial pace.

Still just 22 in 2015, Kepler broke through in a big way at Double-A Chattanooga, winning the Southern League MVP award after leading the circuit in on-base percentage (.416) and slugging (.531). The Twins called him up in mid-September after the Lookouts won the SL title, and while Kepler went 1-for-7 in his cameo, he owns skills worth chasing, including strike-zone awareness, some power, some speed and a strong glove in the outfield.

Lions Capture Second Straight MMDA Title

The Mohawk Valley Lions roared to a second straight MMDA title with an unlikely sweep of the top-seeded Northwest Stars in the World Series. The Lions overcame early deficits in three of the four games, a feat made possible by a pitching staff (and defense) that allowed just seven runs and a 1.75 ERA in the World Series.

Andrew McCutchen hit .333 with two home runs and
six RBIs in four World Series games
Luck never seemed to leave the Lions' side in the 2015 postseason. They went 5-2 in one-run games, 4-0 in extra-inning games and 7-1 on the road. They lost their first two playoff games at home, when they scored only one run in 18 innings against the Pilots' Jake Arrieta and Carlos Carrasco. Then they played 19 extra innings in six tense games with the Crows in which Spokane outscored Mohawk Valley by one run. The Lions lost the first game of that series at home, too.

Two of Mohawk Valley's biggest stars shined brightly in the World Series, when league MVP Andrew McCutchen and league Cy Young Award winner David Price stepped up their games. McCutchen hit .333 (5-for-15) with two home runs, a double, three walks, four runs and six RBIs. He drove in the game-winning runs in Games One and Four. Price picked up the win in the title-clinching Game Four, and in his two starts logged a 1.74 ERA with 12 strikeouts, three walks and nine hits allowed in 10 1/3 innings.

Brief capsules of each World Series game follow.

He went 19-9 with a 2.61 ERA (fifth in the league), 257 strikeouts (third), 1.7 walks per nine innings (eighth), a .209 opponent average (fourth) and 5.9 SO/BB ratio (third).

Final Power Ranking For 2015

An attempt to rank the league's best teams for the 2015 season. Teams sorted by wins, then by run differential.

Note that this is not the official tie-breaking method for playoff seeding or draft order. Also, OPS+ and ERA+ are not adjusted for ballpark context—at least not during the season.

RD stands for run differential and Pyth for Pythagorean winning percentage. BB% and SO/BB ratio do not include intentional walks.

Based on the weighted value for ballpark singles and home runs—and the league's left/right split of 28/72—we would expect Death Valley (107) to finish with the highest park factor and California (87) with the lowest.  They didn't miss by much.
