Round Two: Spokane 4, Death Valley 2

Game recaps from the Strat box scores. In this round two matchup, the No. 2 Death Valley Drivers (103-59) met the No. 3 Spokane Hooded Crows (99-63).


Game One
Crows 6, Drivers 3

Starters: Clayton Kershaw @ Gerrit Cole

Alex Rodriguez slammed a home run as the Spokane Hooded Crows defeated the Death Valley Drivers by a score of 6 to 3 at Drivers Stadium.

Spokane scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning with 2 runs on 3 hits. Chris Colabello got things going when he lofted a solo-blast downtown. After an out was recorded, Danny Valencia came to the plate and lined a one-base hit. Kyle Blanks then reached on an error. Jose Iglesias stepped in and he banged out a single scoring the final run of the inning. Spokane banged out 12 hits on the night.

Clayton Kershaw (1-2) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Roberto Osuna got the save, his 1st.  Clay Buchholz (0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits in 1 1/3 innings. 


Game Two
Drivers 6, Crows 5 (11 innings)

Starters: Cole Hamels @ Dan Haren

The Death Valley Drivers and the Spokane Hooded Crows locked up in an exciting one-run game at Drivers Stadium. The final score was the Death Valley Drivers 6, the Spokane Hooded Crows 5 in 11 innings.

Both teams had scored 5 runs after nine full innings. Death Valley came out on top in the 11th inning.  Randal Grichuk delivered a solo blast making Death Valley victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Death Valley had 13 hits for the night.

Kelvin Herrera (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. Roberto Osuna (0-1) took the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run in 1 inning and saw his ERA increase from 1.59 to 2.70. 


Game Three
Drivers 4, Crows 1

Starters: Aaron Nola @ Zack Greinke

In a game at The Crows Nest the Death Valley Drivers got by the Spokane Hooded Crows by the score of 4 to 1.

Death Valley had 3 runs cross the plate in the 3rd inning. Todd Frazier opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Adeiny Hechavarria stepped up to the plate and he hit a single. Joe Panik then doubled which was good for two runs. After another out, Yoenis Cespedes stepped in and he hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning.  That scoring would be all that was needed.  Death Valley out-hit Spokane for the game, 10 hits to 4.

The win went to Aaron Nola (1-0) who allowed 1 run in 6 2/3 innings. Darren O'Day earned his 1st save. Zack Greinke (1-1) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 4 walks in 7 2/3 innings.


Game Four
Crows 3, Drivers 0

Starters: Gerrit Cole @ Clayton Kershaw

Clayton Kershaw reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts as the Spokane Hooded Crows topped the Death Valley Drivers by a score of 3 to 0 at The Crows Nest.

Kershaw (2-2) was simply too much for the Death Valley batters. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.81. Spokane banged out 9 hits on the night.

Gerrit Cole (0-1) was the loser. The Spokane fans were thrilled by the performance put forth by Kershaw, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most.


Game Five
Crows 8, Drivers 5

Starters: Clay Buchholz @ Cole Hamels

Danny Valencia slammed a home run and had 3 RBI as the Spokane Hooded Crows defeated the Death Valley Drivers by a score of 8 to 5 at The Crows Nest.

Cole Hamels (1-1) had a steady outing. He surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings. The game was a wild affair with the lead changing hands 5 times.

Roberto Osuna preserved the game for Hamels, recording his his 2nd save. Clay Buchholz (0-2) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 5 2/3 innings. 
 

Game Six
Crows 5, Drivers 4

Starters: Zack Greinke @ Dan Haren

Danny Valencia had 2 base hits at Drivers Stadium as the Spokane Hooded Crows beat the Death Valley Drivers 5 to 4.

Zack Greinke (2-1) had a fairly solid outing. He surrendered 10 hits and 1 walk in 7 1/3 innings and gave up 3 homeruns. Spokane managed 9 hits in their victory. 

Roberto Osuna recorded his 3rd save. Dan Haren (0-1) was charged with the loss. With the win Spokane now has a record of 8-5.
