Round One: Spokane 4, St. Louis 3

Game recaps from the Strat box scores. In this round one matchup, the No. 3 Spokane Hooded Crows (96-63) met the No. 6 St. Louis Maulers (93-69).


Game One
Crows 4, Maulers 0

Starters: Jacob deGrom @ Zack Greinke

Zack Greinke took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at The Crows Nest where the Spokane Hooded Crows beat the St. Louis Maulers 4 to 0.

Greinke (1-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the St. Louis offense. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. Greinke whiffed an impressive total of 8 St. Louis batters.  The right-handed Greinke lost his chance for a no-hitter when Nick Hundley singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 3rd inning, with no runs scored after that point.

Jacob deGrom (0-1) absorbed the loss. He pitched 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 walks.


Game Two
Maulers 2, Crows 0

Starters: Chris Sale @ Clayton Kershaw

At The Crows Nest, the Spokane faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. Chris Sale (1-0) finally bested his Spokane counterpart, Clayton Kershaw (0-1), by the score of 2 to 0.

St. Louis wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. That was all Sale needed. St. Louis managed only 6 hits on the night.

Aroldis Chapman recorded the save, his 1st. Kershaw absorbed the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings.


Game Three
Crows 8, Maulers 4

Starters: Jesse Hahn @ Madison Bumgarner

Cameron Maybin slammed a home run and had 3 RBI as the Spokane Hooded Crows beat the St. Louis Maulers by a score of 8 to 4.

Jesse Hahn (1-0) pitched well for Spokane in their victory. He surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. Overall Spokane out-hit St. Louis 14 to 6.

Carson Smith gained credit for his 1st save. Madison Bumgarner (0-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 walks.


Game Four
Crows 5, Maulers 2 (14 innings)

Starters: Zack Greinke @ Jaime Garcia

The Spokane Hooded Crows bested the St. Louis Maulers in 14 innings by a 5 to 2 score at Mauler Field.

Both teams had scored 1 runs after nine full innings. Finally, Spokane pulled the game out in the 14th inning. D.J. Lemahieu got things going when he drew a walk. Cameron Maybin stepped up next and he drew a walk. Nick Ahmed then smacked a single to load the bases. Andre Ethier was up next and he grounded into a double play. Alex Rodriguez came up to bat and launched a three-run homer. Spokane banged out 10 hits on the night.

Tony Sipp (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no runs. Sipp got help from Yimi Garcia, who was credited with his 1st save. Alex Wilson (0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. 


Game Five
Maulers 5, Crows 0

Starters: Clayton Kershaw @ Chris Sale

Chris Sale(2-0), with relief help from Aroldis Chapman, handcuffed the Spokane Hooded Crows batters at Mauler Field in an evening game. The St. Louis Maulers scored 5 runs for the win.

In the bottom of the 6th inning St. Louis went on top for good scoring a single run on 2 base hits. Spokane was out-hit by St. Louis, 10 hits to 3.

Chapman gained credit for his 2nd save. Clayton Kershaw (0-2) took the loss. He surrended 4 home runs in his 8 innings. 


Game Six
Maulers 4, Crows 1

Starters: Jacob deGrom @ Cole Hamels

Jacob deGrom retired 12 batters on strikeouts as the St. Louis Maulers outscored the Spokane Hooded Crows 4 to 1.

DeGrom (1-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the Spokane hitters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks in 7 1/3 innings lowering his ERA from 5.14 to 2.51.  St. Louis managed 7 hits in their victory.

Aroldis Chapman preserved the game for deGrom, recording his his 3rd save. Cole Hamels (0-1) was given the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 7 hits and 2 walks.


Game Seven
Crows 1, Maulers 0 (12 innings)

Starters: Madison Bumgarner @ Zack Greinke

Zack Greinke pitched 6 strong innings as the Spokane Hooded Crows defeated the St. Louis Maulers in 12 innings by the score of 1 to 0 at The Crows Nest.

The score was a scoreless tie after nine. Spokane won the game in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Kyle Blanks blasted a solo shot making Spokane the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Spokane had a total of 7 hits for the game.

The win went to Jesse Hahn (2-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Luke Gregerson (0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 1 hit and no walks in 1/3 of an inning.
