Round One: Death Valley 4, Cape Cod 2

Game recaps from the Strat box scores. In this round one matchup, the No. 2 Death Valley Drivers (103-59) met the No. 7 Cape Cod Breakers (93-69).


Game One
Drivers 6, Breakers 2

Starters: Colby Lewis @ Gerrit Cole

The Death Valley Drivers bested the Cape Cod Breakers by a 6 to 2 score at Drivers Stadium.

Gerrit Cole (1-0) had a solid outing for Death Valley. He went 6 innings surrendering 4 hits and 1 walk. Death Valley had 11 hits for the game and Cape Cod had 8.

Cole got help from Clay Buchholz who was credited with his 1st save. Colby Lewis (0-1) took the loss. He was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 1/3 innings. 


Game Two
Drivers 8, Breakers 5

Starters: Ubaldo Jimenez @ Dan Haren

Dan Haren was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Death Valley Drivers topped the Cape Cod Breakers by a score of 8 to 5 at Drivers Stadium.

Death Valley had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning when they had 4 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Eric Hosmer who electrified Drivers Stadium when he lofted a three-run bomb. Death Valley totaled 15 hits on the night.

Haren (1-0) got the victory, allowing 5 runs for the game. Ubaldo Jimenez (0-1) took the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. 


Game Three
Breakers 3, Drivers 1

Starters: Aaron Nola @ Chase Anderson

Right fielder Shin-Soo Choo had 3 base hits at Pilgrim Park, where the Cape Cod Breakers beat the Death Valley Drivers 3 to 1.

Cape Cod took the lead for good in the 6th inning, scoring a single run on 2 base hits. Cape Cod rapped out 8 hits for the night.

The win was credited to Chase Anderson (1-0) who went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Kenley Jansen recorded his 1st save. Aaron Nola (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 6 hits and 5 walks in 5 2/3 innings. 


Game Four
Breakers 4, Drivers 3

Starters: Gerrit Cole @ Colby Lewis

In a dramatic ending at Pilgrim Park the Cape Cod Breakers won in their last at-bat, beating the Death Valley Drivers by the count of 4 to 3.

Cape Cod scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After two were out Maikel Franco smacked a single. Steve Geltz then uncorked a wild one that found its way to the backstop. Jackie Bradley Jr then doubled, giving Cape Cod the victory as 49,624 happy fans celebrated wildly. Both teams totaled 7 hits on the night.

Trevor May (1-0) was the winner, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Geltz (0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 1 2/3 innings.


Game Five
Drivers 5, Breakers 2

Starters: Clay Buchholz @ Scott Feldman

Eric Hosmer had 4 hits as the Death Valley Drivers outscored the Cape Cod Breakers 5 to 2.

Death Valley took the lead off Scott Feldman in the first inning as they scored 4 runs on 6 base hits. That early run support was all that Clay Buchholz (1-0) required. Darren O'Day pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 1st save.

Feldman (0-1) was given the loss. He surrendered 5 hits and no walks in 1/3 of an inning.


Game Six
Drivers 6, Breakers 5

Starters: Ubaldo Jimenez @ Dan Haren

Yoenis Cespedes slammed a home run and had 2 RBI at Drivers Stadium as the Death Valley Drivers beat the Cape Cod Breakers 6 to 5.

Death Valley brought 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning with the help of 4 hits. Adeiny Hechavarria led off and got things going when he stroked a base-hit. After an out was recorded, Eric Hosmer came up and he doubled scoring a run. Cespedes then banged out a single. Michael Brantley was up next and he cracked a two-run shot. Cape Cod threatened in the 9th, but Death Valley was able to put down the rally.

Brandon Finnegan (1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Finnegan got help from Darren O'Day, who was credited with his 2nd save. Drew Storen (0-1) was the loser in relief.
