Round One: Mohawk Valley 4, Elysian Fields 2

Game recaps from the Strat box scores. In this round one matchup, the No. 4 Elysian Fields Flying Dutchmen (94-68) met the No. 5 Mohawk Valley Lions (93-69).


Game One
Dutchmen 4, Lions 0

Starters: David Price @ Jake Arrieta

Jake Arrieta came through with a solid 8 innings at Elysian Fields where the Elysian Fields Flying Dutchmen beat the Mohawk Valley Lions 4 to 0.

Arrieta (1-0) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Mohawk Valley offense. He surrendered only 2 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Elysian Fields finished with 8 hits while Mohawk Valley ended up with 4.

Arrieta got help from Trevor Rosenthal who earned his 1st save. David Price (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk.


Game Two
Lions 3, Dutchmen 2

Starters: Francisco Liriano @ Max Scherzer

Prince Fielder homered and had 2 RBI as the Mohawk Valley Lions bested the Elysian Fields Flying Dutchmen 3 to 2 at Elysian Fields.

The game was won by Mohawk Valley when they scored a run in the top of the 9th inning. Adam Lind drew a walk. After an out was recorded, J.D. Martinez came to bat and was walked intentionally. Erick Aybar dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Denard Span was up next and he laced a one-base hit scoring the run. Mohawk Valley finished with 8 hits while Elysian Fields ended up with 4.

The win was credited to Oliver Perez (1-0) who went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs. Perez got relief help from Dellin Betances who gained credit for his 1st save. Trevor Rosenthal (0-1) was the loser in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 1 hit and 2 walks.


Game Three
Dutchmen 3, Lions 1 (13 innings)

Starters: Danny Salazar @ Justin Verlander

In a two run game the Elysian Fields Flying Dutchmen got by the Mohawk Valley Lions in 13 innings by the score of 3 to 1.

The score was tied at 1 after nine. Elysian Fields came out on top in the 13th inning. Miguel Montero led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Kolten Wong came to the plate and reached on an error. Andrelton Simmons then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Hunter Pence stepped in and he lined a base-hit driving home two runs. Elysian Fields had only 5 hits for the night.

The win went to Daniel Hudson (1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Stephen Strasburg (0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 2 innings.


Game Four
Lions 2, Dutchmen 1

Starters: Jake Arrieta @ David Price

David Price (1-1) and Jake Arrieta (1-1) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with Price and the Mohawk Valley Lions coming out on top of the Elysian Fields Flying Dutchmen 2 to 1.

Price gave Mohawk Valley a solid outing. He surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings. Price chalked up 8 strikeouts reducing his ERA from 5.40 to 3.00. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.

Dellin Betances earned his 2nd save.


Game Five
Lions 6, Dutchmen 4

Starters: Max Scherzer @ Garrett Richards

In a close game the Mohawk Valley Lions got by the Elysian Fields Flying Dutchmen by the score of 6 to 4.

Garrett Richards (1-0) struggled but was good enough to win with the help of some fine defensive plays. He gave up 6 hits and 7 walks in 5 innings. Elysian Fields tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Joe Smith got the save, his 1st. Max Scherzer (0-1) absorbed the loss.


Game Six
Lions 3, Dutchmen 1

Starters: Francisco Liriano @ Chris Young

Third baseman Yunel Escobar had 2 base hits as the Mohawk Valley Lions defeated the Elysian Fields Flying Dutchmen by a score of 3 to 1 at Elysian Fields.

Mohawk Valley scored the winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs using 2 hits. J.D. Martinez led off and keyed the rally when he lined a one-base hit. Adam Lind got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Escobar struck out, unable to help the rally. Jesus Sucre was up next and he banged out a single. Erick Aybar came to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases. Darin Ruf continued the rally and drew a walk which scored a run. Scott Kazmir then uncorked a wild pitch scoring the final run of the inning. Dellin Betances was great in relief and recorded his 3rd save. 

Will Harris (1-0) went 1 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Trevor Rosenthal (0-2) suffered the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.
