Second baseman Jose Altuve had 2 base hits and Sonny Gray went the distance as the Lake County Nighthawks defeated the Goldenrod Gators by a score of 3 to 1 at Gator Grounds.
Lake County delivered all the runs required in the 5th inning when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Adonis Garcia who silenced the stadium when he ripped a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. The Goldenrod batters didn't put up a fight in the bottom of the 9th.
The winning pitcher was Gray (1-0), who allowed 1 run for the game. Dallas Keuchel (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Game Two
Nighthawks 6, Gators 3
Starters: Jose Quintana @ John Lackey
Curtis Granderson touched them all and had 3 RBI and Jose Quintana pitched a complete game as the Lake County Nighthawks outscored the Goldenrod Gators 6 to 3.
Lake County went ahead for good in the 6th inning scoring 2 runners on 4 hits. Lake County managed 13 hits in their victory.
Quintana (1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. John Lackey (0-1) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around by Lake County, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 1/3 innings.
Game Three
Nighthawks 7, Gators 5
Starters: Jeff Samardzija @ Noah Syndergaard
Noah Syndergaard struck out 10 batters as the Lake County Nighthawks defeated the Goldenrod Gators 7 to 5 at Lake County Park.
Syndergaard (1-0) gave a fine effort for Lake County. He went 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 walks. Lake County and Goldenrod each finished the night with 8 hits.
Wade Davis recorded the save, his 1st. Jeff Samardzija (0-1) ended up with the loss. Lake County knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 6 runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Game Four
Gators 2, Nighthawks 1 (11 innings)
Starters: Dallas Keuchel @ Mark Buehrle
49,897 fans watched an exciting game at Lake County Park. The Goldenrod Gators topped the Lake County Nighthawks by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Goldenrod won it in the 11th inning. After two outs Ryan Braun ripped a solo home run. Lake County went down quietly in the bottom of the 11th.
Brian Matusz (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2/3 of an inning and allowing no runs. Rich Hill earned his 1st save. J.J. Hoover (0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.
Game Five
Nighthawks 7, Gators 6
Starters: John Lackey @ Sonny Gray
The Lake County Nighthawks offense put up 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 4th inning and and the Goldenrod Gators locked up in an exciting one-run game at Lake County Park. The final score was the Lake County Nighthawks 7, the Goldenrod Gators 6.
Sonny Gray (2-0) was credited with the win in a less than impressive performance. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 1/3 innings and surrendered 3 home runs. Lake County won despite being out-hit by Goldenrod 10 hits to 6.
Wade Davis earned his 2nd save. John Lackey (0-2) was the losing pitcher. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 2 2/3 innings of work.
