Round Two: Northeast 4, Goldenrod 2

Game recaps from the Strat-generated box scores. In this series, the No. 1 Northeast Huskies (115-47) had home-field advantage versus the No. 4 Goldenrod Gators (94-68).

Game One 
Huskies 7, Gators 4

In a good matchup it was the Northeast Huskies 7, the Goldenrod Gators 4 at Huskie Park.

Northeast tallied 3 runs in the 4th inning when they came up with 3 base hits. It was enough scoring to earn the victory. Northeast banged out 9 hits on the night. 

The win went to Adam Wainwright (2-0) who allowed 4 runs in 6 2/3 innings. Wilton Lopez earned the save, his 1st. Jeff Samardzija (1-1) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up 9 hits and 4 walks.


Game Two
Huskies 7, Gators 3

Shortstop Jose Reyes had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Northeast Huskies topped the Goldenrod Gators by a score of 7 to 3 at Huskie Park.

Wilton Lopez (2-0) was solid in relief, and he got credit for the win. He surrendered no hits and 1 walk in 1 1/3 innings. Northeast banged out 9 hits on the night. 

Andrew Miller (0-1) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 1 hit without retiring a batter.


Game Three
Huskies 6, Gators 2

James Shields had a complete game as the Northeast Huskies topped the Goldenrod Gators by a score of 6 to 2 at Gator Grounds.

Shields (2-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Northeast. He went 9 innings allowing 8 hits and 2 walks lowering his ERA from 2.84 to 2.35. Northeast banged out 10 hits on the night.

Carlos Villanueva (1-1) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings.


Game Four
Gators 4, Huskies 3

Ryan Braun smashed 2 home runs at Gator Grounds where the Goldenrod Gators beat the Northeast Huskies 4 to 3.

Goldenrod had the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning with 2 runs on 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Braun began things off when he smashed a solo shot out of the park. Paul Konerko next to the plate and he ripped a single. Aramis Ramirez then drew a walk. Anthony Rizzo stepped in and he doubled. Jarrod Dyson was the next batter, but he struck out. Goldenrod had 8 hits for the game and Northeast had 5. 

The victory was credited to Dale Thayer (1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Scott Atchison (0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. 


Game Five
Gators 7, Huskies 2

Paul Konerko blasted a home run and had 4 RBI at Gator Grounds where the Goldenrod Gators beat the Northeast Huskies 7 to 2.

The Goldenrod fans enjoyed the offense provided by Konerko. He ripped a single which scored a run in the 1st inning, lined a base hit plating two runs in the 4th inning and hit a bases-empty home run in the 7th inning. Goldenrod finished with 11 hits while Northeast ended up with 7. 

The victory went to Jeff Samardzija (2-1), who went 8 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Shaun Marcum (1-1) ended up with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners, giving up 11 hits and 8 walks in 8 innings. 


Game Six
Huskies 2, Gators 0

Kris Medlen struck out 10 batters as the Northeast Huskies bested the Goldenrod Gators 2 to 0 at Huskie Park.

Medlen (1-1) was very good in the win. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 2/3 innings improving his ERA from 5.79 to 3.92. Northeast finished with just 4 hits in the victory.

Medlen got help from Wilton Lopez who earned his 2nd save. David Phelps (0-2) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk.

Medlen was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the victory and I'll sure take 10 strikeouts anytime!'
