World Series: Northeast 4, Northwest 3

Game recaps from the Strat-generated box scores. In the World Series, the No. 1 Northeast Huskies (115-47) had home-field advantage versus the No. 7 Northwest Stars (90-72). 

Game One 
Stars 6, Huskies 5

First baseman Carlos Santana had 2 base hits as the Northwest Stars topped the Northeast Huskies by a score of 6 to 5 at Huskie Park.

Northwest took the lead off Adam Wainwright in the first inning scoring one runner. After two outs Jason Heyward single-handedly provided the offense with a solo home run. Adam Jones was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim.  Northeast made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

Madison Bumgarner (3-0) allowed 2 runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Rafael Soriano earned the save, his 1st. Wainwright (2-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 walks.


Game Two
Huskies 5, Stars 3

Jose Reyes went deep and had 3 RBI as the Northeast Huskies outscored the Northwest Stars 5 to 3.

James Shields (3-0) gave a fine effort for Northeast. He was reached for 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 1/3 innings. Shields recorded 9 strikeouts lowering his ERA to 2.08. Northwest tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 

Wilton Lopez recorded the save, his 3rd. Doug Fister (3-2) was the loser. He allowed 5 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings. 'It felt really nice to get this win,' Shields said. 'I kind of dictated the game. It's what I get paid to do. It worked out this time.'


Game Three
Huskies 3, Stars 0

Second baseman Robinson Cano had 4 hits and Kris Medlen delivered 8 solid innings as the Northeast Huskies topped the Northwest Stars by a score of 3 to 0 at Star Dome.

Northeast did all of it's offensive work in the 8th inning with 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Cano led off and started the rally when he delivered a base hit. Justin Ruggiano was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Josh Willingham then drew a walk. Allen Craig came up and he lined a single. After another out, Evan Longoria stepped up to the plate and he doubled. Northeast finished with 10 hits while Northwest ended up with 5.

Medlen (2-1) allowed no runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Casey Janssen preserved the game for Medlen, recording his his 3rd save. Jordan Zimmermann (1-3) took the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks.


Game Four
Stars 6, Huskies 5

The Northwest Stars ended a long winless drought and edged the Northeast Huskies at Star Dome by the score of 6 to 5.

A.J. Griffin (2-1) pitched well enough to earn the win. He was reached for 4 hits and 4 walks in 5 2/3 innings. Northeast threatened in the 9th but Northwest was able to put down the rally. 

Craig Kimbrel gained credit for his 5th save. Adam Wainwright (2-1) was the loser. 'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Griffin said.


Game Five
Stars 11, Huskies 0

Alex Gordon collected 2 extra-base hits and had 4 RBI and Madison Bumgarner recorded a complete-game shutout at Star Dome as the Northwest Stars embarrassed the Northeast Huskies by the lopsided score of 11 to 0.

It was a good day for Northwest thanks to Gordon. He doubled which was good for two runs in the 2nd inning, ripped a one-base hit scoring two baserunners in the 3rd inning and tripled in the 7th inning. Northwest rapped out 17 hits for the night.

Bumgarner (4-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. James Shields (3-1) was given the loss. He allowed 5 hits and no walks in 1 2/3 innings.


Game Six
Huskies 3, Stars 2

49,522 fans watched an exciting game at Huskie Park. The Northeast Huskies topped the Northwest Stars by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Northeast went ahead for good in the 6th inning plating an isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. Northwest threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. 

The win was credited to Jose Valverde (1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Casey Janssen was credited with his 3rd save. Doug Fister (3-3) absorbed the loss. 


Game Seven
Huskies 7, Stars 5 (17 innings)

In a close game it was the Northeast Huskies 7, the Northwest Stars 5 in 17 innings at Huskie Park.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Northeast won the game in the 17th inning. After an out was recorded, Robinson Cano was the sparkplug when he drew a walk. One out later, David Ortiz came to bat and cracked a two-run shot making Northeast the winners and sending the 46,318 fans home happy. Northeast managed 13 hits in their victory. 

The victory went to Darren Oliver (1-0) who went 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Rafael Soriano (0-1) in relief. He pitched 2 innings giving up no hits and 1 walk.
