Round One: Goldenrod 4, St. Louis 2

Game recaps from the Strat-generated box scores. In this series, the No. 4 Goldenrod Gators (94-68) had home-field advantage versus the No. 5 St. Louis Maulers (92-70).

Game One
Maulers 3, Gators 2

Zack Greinke racked up an impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the St. Louis Maulers topped the Goldenrod Gators by a score of 3 to 2 at Gator Grounds.

Greinke (1-0) pitched a solid game. He surrendered only 6 hits and no walks in 8 innings. Goldenrod made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

Matt Thornton earned his 1st save. David Phelps (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 5 hits and no walks.

'I had my good stuff tonight.' Greinke said. 'As the game went along I started to get the feeling that I was going to strike out a bunch of hitters.'


Game Two
Gators 3, Maulers 1

Ryan Braun jacked one out of the ballyard as the Goldenrod Gators defeated the St. Louis Maulers by a score of 3 to 1 at Gator Grounds.

Andy Pettitte (1-0) slammed the door shut in an excellent relief performance. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and no walks in 4 innings and whiffed an impressive total of 6 St. Louis batters. Dale Thayer was great in relief and recorded his 1st save. 

Jered Weaver (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 3 home runs in his 5 2/3 innings.


Game Three
Gators 10, Maulers 4

Jeff Samardzija went the distance as the Goldenrod Gators outscored the St. Louis Maulers 10 to 4.

Anthony Rizzo had a big day with his bat. He laced a base-knock which brought home a run in the 1st inning, laced a one-base hit in the 3rd inning and smashed a two-run homer in the 4th inning. Goldenrod managed 13 hits in their victory. 

The victory was credited to Samardzija (1-0) who went the distance, allowing 4 runs. Jason Hammel (0-1) was the losing pitcher. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings. 


Game Four
Gators 8, Maulers 5 (10 innings)

In a game at Mauler Field the Goldenrod Gators got by the St. Louis Maulers in 10 innings by the score of 8 to 5.

The score was tied at 5 after nine. Finally, Goldenrod pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Torii Hunter led off and got things going when he delivered a base hit. Sergio Romo then was wild with a pitch. Anthony Rizzo then laced a one-base hit. Ryan Braun followed next and he singled. Braun took his lead and swiped second. Paul Konerko got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Aramis Ramirez stepped into the batter's box and he doubled. Russell Martin then was hit by a pitch. One out later, Jamey Carroll followed, but he was set down on strikes. St. Louis was out-hit by Goldenrod, 15 hits to 11. 

The victory was credited to Jim Henderson (1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Henderson got relief help from Dale Thayer who gained credit for his 2nd save. Romo (0-1) took the loss in relief. 


Game Five
Maulers 3, Gators 2

Second baseman Ian Kinsler had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Maulers bested the Goldenrod Gators 3 to 2 at Mauler Field.

St. Louis tallied 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning with the help of 4 hits. They would prove to be the difference in the contest. Goldenrod tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 

The victory was credited to Luis Mendoza (1-0) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Matt Belisle recorded his 1st save. Nate Jones (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. 


Game Six
Gators 5, Maulers 0

Russell Martin ripped 3 home runs and had 4 RBI and Carlos Villanueva pitched 8 strong innings as the Goldenrod Gators beat the St. Louis Maulers by a score of 5 to 0.

Martin was in a groove all evening. He smashed a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, cracked a solo home run in the 4th inning and blasted a solo shot in the 6th inning. Goldenrod had 8 hits for the game and St. Louis had 3.

Villanueva (1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing no runs. Jered Weaver (0-2) was charged with the loss. He served up 4 gopher balls in 5 2/3 innings. 

'I was really seeing the ball tonight,' Martin said 'I wish it was always this easy.'
