Active MMDA Manager Register 2016

In the continuing tradition of lifting ideas from Baseball-Reference, I created an all-time register for the 20 active managers in the MMDA.

A similar table to the one that appears here also runs at the bottom of our site's Playoff History page, but even I sometimes forget it's there. So I embellished the data from that page and created a more prominent space for it here on the blog.

Thanks to commissioner James Bailey's record keeping from the early years of the MMDA, I had access to comprehensive won-loss and playoff data back through the 1995 season. So that's where I drew the line for this table. Five active managers played in the league in 1994 or earlier, but the results of those seasons are not reflected here.

Managers are sorted here by career wins. Remember, this data goes back only through the 1995 season.

Congratulations to John Tresca and Ray Ross for recording their 2,000th career wins (since 1995) during the 2016 season. More fanfare should have been afforded them.

Steven Tresca is on deck to clear 2,000 wins in 2017.

For perspective, Tony La Russa cleared 2,700 wins, Bobby Cox cleared 2,500 and Joe Torre cleared 2,300 in their storied major league managing careers. They rank third, fourth and fifth all time.

In terms of qualifying for the playoffs, John Lamanna has an unrivaled track record for success. His Goldenrod Gators have reached the postseason in six of seven seasons, which is good for an 86 percent success rate. He claimed the 2012 World Series title.

Five other managers have made the playoffs more often than not (since 1995): Ray Ross (82 percent of seasons), Steven Tresca (77 percent), John Tresca (73 percent), Matt Eddy (60 percent) and James Bailey (59 percent).

For the sake of posterity, I will record here the pre-1995 results for managers for whom we can track down results.

James Bailey went 130-194 (.401) in 1993-94
Steve Frediani went 97-65 (.599) in 1994
Steven Tresca went 45-117 (.278) in 1994

Jim Baker (1992) and Ray Ross (1989) trace their roots back even farther than the above trio, but their records for the seasons prior to 1995 may be lost to time.

The above tables account for just 11 World Series champions for the past 22 seasons of MMDA play. Two of the most distinguished inactive managers account for nine of the missing titles.

Bob Tresca's Newton Rockcrushers won the World Series in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2003, and he left the franchise in excellent shape when he stepped down after the 2003 season.

Following a one-year stewardship by Jim Callis, Kevin Burns took over the franchise in 2005 and renamed it the Bethlehem Beaz. Burns claimed league titles in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011. He also won a pennant in 2008.

If ever you feel good about the status of your MMDA team, check out these historic runs.
